Ball Bearing Sprag Clutch Units

Low to Med Torque Capacity. Our Most Popular Clutch Line.

These ball-bearing clutches are economical and are designed with ball bearings only. They don’t have roller bearings like the complete units.

Similarly, the sizes are matched to 6200 radial ball bearings and most importantly, this product line is a good choice for low to medium torque requirements.

Torque capacity of our ball bearing clutches is 53 to 267 Mn, and the bore (ID) size ranges from 17 to 40 mm (0.669 to 1.57 in).

We stock GMN’s FK, FKN, and FKNN series ball bearing clutches.

Specs at a glance:

  • Clutch Width (mm): 12 to 18
  • Operating Temperature: 284°F (140°C) or on request, 338°F (170°C)
  • ID Size Range (mm): 17 to 40
  • OD Size Range (mm): 40 to 80
  • Torque (Nm): 53 to 267
  • Inner Ring: Press Fit and/or Keyway
  • Outer Ring: Press fit and/or Keyway
  • Bearing Style: Integrated Ball Bearing

Sprag Clutch Elements

Low to High Torque Capacity.

Our 400 series one-way bearing element comes with either mounting rings or without. The components consist of a cage, sprags, and a spring. The FE 400 series is a great option if you need a large number of clutches but can’t sacrifice torque requirements.

These bearings are good for large orders and low to high torque needs (1 to 2673 Nm). The bore (ID) size varies from 2 to 240 mm (0.078 to 9.448 in).

Specs at a glance:

  • Clutch Width (mm): 7 or 12
  • Operating Temperature: Max 338°F (170°C)
  • ID Size Range (mm): 2 to 240
  • OD Size Range (mm): 10 to 236
  • Torque (Nm): 4 to 14,060
  • Inner Ring: Press Fit and/or Keyway

Questions to Consider When Choosing a One-Way Bearing

Before choosing your clutch, you need to know a few key pieces of information.

  • What’s driving the force? Electric motor, engine, etc.
  • How will you be using the clutch? Backstopping, overrunning or indexing?
  • How much torque will be transmitted/needed?
  • What is your shaft diameter or bore size?
  • Environment temperature while in operation.
  • Will you need grease or oil lubrication?

Sprag Clutch FAQs

How Do Sprag Clutches Work?
  • Insert elements are the components inside a sprag clutch and contain a cage, sprags and a spring.
  • The number of sprags in an insert element is determined by the size of the shaft. The spring preloads the friction between those sprags and parts.
  • These insert elements are not self-centering and require additional bearing support for proper function, which both our complete sprag units and ball bearing units provide.
  • To learn more, check out our Sprag Clutch Guide!
What are the benefits of buying one-way sprags from GMN?
  • The design of our GMN sprag clutches offers some key benefits for our customers:
    • Our clutches are manufactured with small sprags which makes them light, compact (space-saver) and allows high indexing frequencies.
    • Optimized design of the clamping curve allows our sprags to operate with high production and indexing accuracy.
Can GMN's One-Way Sprags Replace My Existing Sprags?

Most likely, yes! GMN's sprag clutches are direct drop-in replacements for well known brands such as BorgWarner, Stieber, Formsprag, Renold, Ringspann, etc. This means your system will not require a redesign to start using GMN clutches. With our unmatched design and functionality, our clutches are often an upgrade! To learn more about switching to GMN clutches, refer to our cross-reference guide.

What causes sprag clutch failure?

The reason behind sprag clutch failure can vary from one application to another, but is often related to application conditions and can generally be categorized into 3 main types: overrunning failure, loading failure, or cage failure. Overloading, poor lubrication, contamination, or improper installation are all common causes of clutch failure and can wear out the clutch over time.

How do I test if my sprag clutch is working properly?

Simply rotate the assembly in both directions ensuring that the sprag engages in the correct direction as designed.  If extra resistance or other rough conditions exist, the clutch may need to be replaced.  Contact a GMN Bearing USA engineer for further assistance.

At what point should I replace my sprag clutch?

At any point when function is significantly impaired, the clutch should be replaced.  This includes but is not limited to rough running, not driving, and other functionality issues.

How do I install a one-way sprag clutch?
  1. Clean all contact surfaces carefully.
  2. Press it the inner and outer rings without passing the force through the balls of the clutch.
  3. Check the clutch engagement direction using the arrow on the inner ring.
  4. Expect radial clearance post-install and adjust tolerances if needed.
  5. Know whether your unit is pre-lubricated (sealed) or needs lubrication added.

For more information on how to install one-way sprag clutches, check out our installation guide.

What is the difference between a sprag clutch and a roller clutch?

A sprag clutch uses small, wedge-shaped parts that lock tightly when turning one way, giving smooth and strong performance. A roller clutch uses rollers that move along ramps to lock, which can be noisier and less smooth. Sprag clutches handle higher torque better and last longer in tough conditions, while roller clutches are simpler and work well for lighter loads. Learn more about the differences in our Sprag Clutch Guide.
