Importance of calculating proper tightening torque

GMN Precision Lock Nut Precision nuts are the most common way to install precision bearings, ensuring correct axial clamping force fixes the bearings securely into the specified position and ensures necessary bearing preload, runout, and rigidity.  Without the proper torque rating and procedure, diminished life and performance may occur. 

  • Over-torquing can lead to component failure
  • Under-torquing can cause excessive movement and premature bearing failure.

Precision bearings are very sensitive to the correct preload for the desired applicationIf the torque of the nut clamping the bearings into place is incorrect, bearing life may be greatly reducedFurthermore, incorrect axial force between the axial surfaces may cause micro-fretting with small relative rotations.  

Guidelines
  • Ensure the plane sides of the nut are ground perpendicular to the nuts thread within a 2µ perpendicularity tolerance. 
  • Intermediate hardened spacers/sleeves must also be ground to a plane parallelism of 2µ to ensure proper transfer of axial forces .
  • A precision nut with a locking mechanism is preferred.

 

Installation
  • Oil the thread lightly.
  • Tighten precision nuts to 2 to 3 times their REFERENCE torque, loosen the nut again then tighten the nut down to their REFERENCE torque. (This compensates for temperature-induced dimension changes of rings, settling, and any potential burrs.)

The required pressure bonding of multiple bearings (axially) and overcoming bearing friction resistance by the bearing's press fit on the shaft (radially) is assured by the 2 to 3 times initial tightening torque.
