Industrial Winch

In just about every industry a winch can be found reliably working to provide critical safety and support. A winch clutch is an important component located inside the winch that locks the motor shaft to the brake assembly preventing the spool from unwinding when the motor stops.

Many winch OEMs rely on our GMN FE 8000 sprag clutch for its reliability, and quality. So whether your winch takes a boat out of the water, helps a lineman lift a telephone pole, or maneuvers industrial machines into position, a GMN FE 8000 is a great choice for your winch application.

The Unique Design of Our FE 8000 Winch Clutch

GMN sprag type clutch, just the elements
The GMN FE 8000 Sprag Clutch
  1. It has more sprags than any other clutch on the market. These extra sprags give the clutch a higher than average torque capacity, which is critical for preventing accidents and injuries.
  2. The sprags have a unique geometrical design that prevents them from lifting off the shaft at high speeds and allows the clutch to operate within any RPM range, they have no max RPM limit.
  3. A compact design that maximizes the absorption of torque. They’ve been optimized to perform with the highest torque and lowest space requirements in the industry. This helps winch manufacturers save on costs while increasing safety.

Schedule time with a GMN engineer and find out if the FE 8000 series is a good fit for your application.

How a Winch Clutch Works

Most winch designs connect the motor to a planetary gear that drives the winch drum. Before the motor shaft gets to the planetary gear it goes through a brake assembly containing a sprag clutch. When the motor turns the winch drum, to spool the cable, it also disengages the sprag clutch.

Take a look at our winch case study to see how we helped one manufacturer eliminate RPM limits and increase safety.

A Winch Clutch Prevents Damage

When the motor stops, or in the event of a motor failure, force on the cable could cause it to unspool resulting in property damage and/or serious personal injury.

Having a sprag clutch designed into the winch assembly prevents this from happening. If the motor stops and starts to unwind, the sprag clutch activates and locks the motor shaft to the brake assembly and prevents the spool from unwinding.

The GMN Advantage

No matter what kind of lifting apparatus, we understand that safety and quality are at the forefront of every winch company. All our GMN clutches are manufactured with the highest precision tolerance standards to ensure a high-quality reliable product every time.
