The GMN FE 400 series without mounting rings

Our FE 400 Series is designed without mounting rings, ready to place on a shaft and housing that is hardened and ground.

FE 400 Product Table Key

M
Meander spring; Can index up to 60 Hz, best for high indexing applications.
Z
Tension spring; Can index up to 10 Hz, best for overrunning & backstopping applications.
Z2
Thinner version of the Z series (7 mm wide). Good for space restrictions & lower torque applications.

GMN Sprag Clutch Elements with Mounting Rings

Similar to the FE 400 series above, our FR 400 and FRN 400 series are designed with hardened & ground races that press fit onto a shaft and housing assembly. Use this series if your shaft and housing are NOT hardened and ground.

FR & FRN Product Table Key

FR
Mounting rings with a press fit inner ring. Fits shaft diameter from 10-45 mm.
FRN
Mounting rings with a keyway inner ring. Fits shaft diameter from 10-60 mm.

External Support for Our Sprag Elements

RL Series Use our RL roller bearings to keep GMN Sprag Insert Elements concentric to the shaft and housing. The RL series is meticulously optimized to use the same shaft and housing dimensions as the FE series – lowers machining costs!

If you are thinking of using the RL series for our FR / FRN sprag elements with mounting rings, please contact our onsite engineers to help you calculate the correct RL size for your shaft and housing assembly.

FAQs

What is the difference between GMN's 400 series and FE 8000 series sprag clutches?

GMN’s FE 400 series sprag clutches are compact and lightweight, making them ideal for moderate torque and indexing applications, but they have practical speed limits due to centrifugal lift-off at high RPMs. The FE 8000 series have larger sprags that increase contact force as speed rises, allowing for significantly higher torque capacity with no RPM limit. The FE 400 series is an ideal choice for compact, medium-duty designs, while the FE 8000 series is engineered for more demanding, high-speed, high-torque applications.

What applications work best with the FE 400 series sprag clutch?

Sprag clutches are all about finesse.  For any application that demands a smooth torque transfer, oscillations, or an on/off frequency, a sprag clutch may be the right choice.  The GMN FE 400 series is compact with a high torque to envelope ratio to support a multitude of applications.  Uses vary widely from a bicycle hub to fire safety devices; give one of our clutch experts a call to find out how we can make a clutch work for your application.

How is a FE 400 series sprag clutch installed?

To install an FE 400 sprag clutch element, ensure the shaft and housing are properly hardened, ground, and machined to the correct tolerances before assembly. All this information can be found in our Sprag Clutch Catalog.

Mounting instructions and suggestions can also be found here.

How does a sprag insert element work in a one-way bearing?

The very intricate design of a sprag allows it to freewheel or gently slide along the shaft/housing in one direction and then wedge itself in the other direction or driving direction.  The sprag will wedge itself to drive/transfer the torque and roll up as the torque increases.  Even though a sprag may appear to be simple, it is a highly complex, highly engineered part to achieve smooth torque transfer.

Are GMN sprag clutch insert elements interchangeable between other manufacturers?

Sprag clutches may be interchangeable between manufacturers, but the specifications should always be checked to be sure a proper exchange can be made.  Shaft and/or housing tolerances, max torque ratings, RPM ratings, etc. may differ from one manufacturer to another. To learn more about swapping your existing sprag clutch insert elements with GMN parts, contact our engineers.
